Bugatti valve operation by pull-rod and push rod, probably late 1903 or 1904. In 1904, in partnership with Emil Mathis, Ettore Bugatti introduced the ‘Hermes’ car, his Type 6 which had overhead Inlet valves, as ‘A’ like the Types 2-5, but side exhaust valves, as ‘E’.

Overhead camshaft drawing of Ettore Bugatti’s Type 8, similar to his Hermes but the new engine featured this overhead camshaft operating overhead inlet and exhaust valves via curved tappet sliders with rollers.

The first Type 8 was Ettore Bugatti’s prototype (pre Deutz agreement). The new overhead cam engine was fitted to a Hermes chassis and featured ‘EB’ wheel nuts and ‘BUGATTI’ on the radiator. 1907.
